Cosmos as the Garden
Introduction by Karolina Nieduza
Cosmos as the Garden is a collection of voice documentation recordings from my studies with the Javanese artist Suprapto Suryodarmo. Most of them come from workshops I attended during my stay in Java in 2012–2013; a few are recordings from 2011, made in Europe.
From over 2,000 hours of audio recordings, I have extracted 287 chapters, each lasting from 1 to 30 minutes.
Prapto and I met in 2011 in Bali, Indonesia and, over the next eight years, he became both my teacher and friend. He was one of the most exceptional movement artists I have ever encountered.
What distinguished him from other dancers and movers? His movement exceeded the boundaries of aesthetic form, choreography, or expression. While moving, he showed extremely high body awareness, which manifested itself in a relaxed state of consciousness—the ability to sense, receive, connect, and communicate with the environment. As a result, he acquired a unique movement style that was stunning to observe and impossible to imitate. Of course, this is only my subjective point of view and may not coincide with the views of other students.
For over 8 years of countless workshops, we moved or danced at all times of the day, night and year, in the blazing sun and heavy monsoon rain, in Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Chinese temples, as well as in stone circles, bazaars, markets, public parks, museums, construction sites, archaeological sites, and, of course, in the bosom of nature. The list is endless. We moved both in moments of joy and moments of exhaustion, disappointment, fear, and anger.
Why were we doing all this? To experience, to understand ourselves and the world through our bodies and our senses, and to transform ourselves. However, above all, we shared a common passion and appreciation for art and a strong desire to understand the source of life.
Almost every day, we ask ourselves several fundamental questions:
What is art? What is beauty? What is creation? What is movement and stopping? What is the source of life? What is a ritual? What are the performing arts? What is communication, and how do we communicate? What is relaxation, and why? What is receiving and expressing? What is safety, and what is fear? etc.
This collection of recordings answers these and many other questions related to life and the human condition on Earth.
For anyone unfamiliar with Prapto who will be listening to it for the first time, I would suggest listening with an open heart, even if you have difficulty understanding the topic; many things will become clearer over time.
