Our ethos |
The themes of Triarchy's books invite us to think differently about the way people live together in families and in society, and to think again about how we understand ourselves and the problems we face. The single thread that holds all our books, and the ideas they contain, together is Systems thinking – the notion that we can never realistically address any problem or opportunity, consider any individual or organisation, without looking at the widest possible picture, at the biological, social, cultural, organisational and ecological networks in which they participate.
The team at Triarchy are committed to getting books 'out there' that carry a message, concept or idea that we believe is important, and that in some way benefits society. Our choices about which books we publish are therefore seldom motivated purely by profit, but by our desire to share our authors' ideas with a wider audience. That said, we do need to make a bit of money to survive in the competitive publishing world, so we are grateful to all our customers who buy directly from us! At the bottom of this page, you will find our little THANK YOU for all your support ... All profits from the sale of our poetry anthology, Project Boast, published to celebrate International Women's Day in 2018, go to the Malala Fund |
Reducing our environmental impact |
Every day in the UK each of us contributes to climate change through our daily activities – whether it’s driving, working, watching TV, shopping, or taking a holiday. Almost everything we do will affect our carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Here at Triarchy Press we are keen to mitigate the environmental impact of our business, and reduce our carbon footprint in as many ways as we can.
Triarchy has signed up to Dorset Declares, a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to building a community of local businesses in our area taking meaningful action to reduce the impacts of climate change and improve sustainability. As part of our action plan, we have taken the following practical steps to reduce our carbon footprint day-to-day:
Additionally, we are working with our suppliers to reduce unsustainable packaging, and paying attention to our own personal consumption habits. Tree Planting
Starting in 2022, we teamed up with EFORESTS, a not-for-profit organisation established in 2006 to help combat climate change by creating and restoring wood-lands across the UK. Through EFORESTS' tree dedication scheme we have committed to plant one tree for every new book we publish, dedicated to its author(s). Not only do trees support biodiversity and improve air quality, each tree can also absorb up to 500 kgs of carbon dioxide throughout its lifetime! EFORESTS work with existing, publicly accessible community woodlands, wildlife trusts and nature reserves to help preserve and enhance woodlands or woodland corridors to benefit wildlife and our future generations. Where possible we ask EFORESTS to plant a tree in the county or region where each author is based, and we then email them a Tree Dedication certificate telling them what species of tree has been planted, and the woodland in which it is located. Climate action Triarchy Press is an organisational member of Dorset Climate Action Network – a network of community groups and individuals working together for a shared vision of a clean, green, sustainable Dorset (the area of the UK where we are based). We work closely with local groups trying to clean up our river (the River Char) and beach, to reduce the amount of pollution that gets into the river and to reduce the amount of chemical pesticides and herbicides used locally – River Char Community Project, Lower Char Community Project, Char Valley Lifelines. We make our offices available free of charge for a number of these local groups to hold their committee and planning meetings. We’re proud to have published Daniel Wahl’s Designing Regenerative Cultures, whose ideas have been used to inform and underpin one of Extinction Rebellion’s core values. Daniel won the RSA Bicentenary Medal 2021 for his work in this area – which also inspired the authors of Flourish (which shows architects, city designers and others how to apply regenerative principles in their work). |
