Origins
Joan Davis

Origins is Joan Davis's masterpiece - an extraordinary achievement. It's a body based approach to our developmental evolutionary process from preconception to standing.

The book weaves together existing and new strands of somatic practices into a vibrant and colourful tapestry that is unique to each one of us

Drawing on Body-Mind Centering, Authentic Movement, Advaita Vedanta, Process-Oriented Psychology, Craniosacral Therapy, Family Constellation Work, embryology and many other sources, Origins takes readers on a literal journey from pre-conception through our formation as an embryo, birth and the development of perception and movement. A series of 'somaticisations' and 'Acts of Enquiry' invite us back to explore each of the nine stages (or spirals) that the book covers.

The book's spirals mirror the process of our physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development, which occurs in overlapping spirals and is neither linear nor hierarchical. It is more like an elaborate dance that unfolds as we grow.

This book attempts to express the universality of our humanity and our interconnectedness. The writing (laced with poetry, information interludes, reflections and experiences) strongly evokes Joan Davis's teaching style - and the book draws extensively on her Origins training programme.

Access to a gallery of images and guided somaticizations is available online after purchase.
Review
"Reading Joan’s very, very unusual poetic writings, felt journeys and images have taken me on a personal journey of exploration and felt surprises as I journeyed through the book. I found an amazing flow of poetry, explorations, drawings, inquiries and felt surprises as I journeyed through ORIGINS. I found that I had to really, really slow myself down. I had to open my perceptual felt senses to the present moment of experience to resonate with her journey and writings–which took me into unexpected areas of my past, present and potential future!"
