IFF RESILIENCE MODEL

The International Futures Forum distinguishes Resilience 1 (based on H2- type innovation enabling the ‘bounce back’ to business as usual) from Resilience 2 (based on H2+ type innovation and fundamental systemic transformation that increases our ability to respond creatively to change in the future). We need the right balance between persistent and adaptive resilience (Type 1) and transformative resilience (Type 2) in socio-ecological systems (SES). Knowing when to maintain the existing system and when to transform it in response to outdated patterns is part of the systemic awareness and foresight human can add to SESs.

Exploring the questions asked in this book at the individual, business, community, regional, national and international scale is one way to co-create design conversations with transformative effects. Resilience 2 is also called transformative resilience (International Futures Forum, 2009; Hodgson, 2011; Wahl, 2011).
