The Language of the Axis
In The Language of the Axis Mary Fulkerson (who was head of dance at Dartington for a decade in its heyday) explores the interplay between body awareness and movement.
The book is in three parts: In A Look at the Body, Fulkerson offers a foundational understanding of how bones and muscles interact to create balance and movement. She emphasises the importance of body images — concepts that facilitate ease of action by enhancing awareness of one's physical structure. Easy Action offers practical exercises to embody these anatomical principles through specific movements. Each action is meticulously described, allowing readers to engage deeply with their bodies and experience the sensations that arise from proper alignment and movement. Finally, in Seeing a Context, Fulkerson shares her personal experiences, showing how her ideas can be applied in real life. She introduces a new language — one that transcends words and speaks to the sensations experienced within the body. This language fosters a dialogue between thought and action, promoting holistic self-awareness. Overall, the book is not just a guide to physical movement; it is an invitation to cultivate a deeper connection between mind and body. ReadershipThe book is intended primarily for students, practitioners and teachers in the fields of:
It should also be of interest to lay students and practitioners of the above, as well as academics in these fields. Linda Hartley writes"Peter Hulton, head of the Theatre Department at Dartington whilst I was a student there, and later principal of the College, created a series of Theatre Papers written by teachers and associates of Dartington from the 1970s onwards.
I recently reviewed the papers written by Mary while preparing an article I had been invited to write and could see how the seeds of all I had later come to study with Bonnie and Janet, as well as with my teachers of Buddhism and T’ai Chi Ch’uan, were present in Mary’s teaching, sometimes in embryonic form and sometimes fully fledged. I could see how my path had been prepared during those many hours spent in the beautiful dance studio at Dartington, under Mary’s inspired tuition. I will draw out some of the themes from her early writing, dating back to 1977 but just as relevant for us today, and then discuss how these threads, which were foundations of her teaching of Release Work, returned and were developed in my later studies with Bonnie and Janet."
